Vision
To build a just, rehabilitative, and humane correctional system in South Africa — one that restores dignity, upholds human rights, and balances the scales of justice for all, irrespective of offence, culture, creed, disability, or background.
Mission
- Advocate for the human rights and dignity of all incarcerated individuals, particularly people with disabilities, minorities, and those unjustly marginalized.
- Establish a national database of affected families to centralize cases, track systemic failures, and ensure accountability.
- Facilitate legal representation for inmates by partnering with attorneys, legal clinics, and human rights defenders.
- Collaborate with government departments, civil society, and the private sector to design and implement solutions.
- Address systemic failures such as unfair sentencing, prolonged awaiting-trial detention, stigmatization, medical neglect, and assault by EST officials.
- Champion rehabilitation and reintegration, working with ex-offenders, families, and juvenile rehabilitation programs.

Core Values
- Truth – Uncompromising pursuit of justice.
- Transparency – Integrity in all engagements with government, civil society, and the public.
- Accountability – Demanding fair oversight within correctional services.
- Humanity – Restoring dignity, compassion, and equality behind bars.
Strategic Focus Areas
- Legal & Justice Balance: Advocate for the implementation of the Phaahla and Van Vuuren judgments on life sentences and parole.
- Medical & Disability Rights: Ensure that healthcare in prisons is constitutional, accessible, and equitable, and that inmates with disabilities receive appropriate support.
- Oversight & Accountability: Launch an independent Prison Intelligence & Monitoring Program (‘surveillance of the surveillance’).
- Rehabilitation & Reintegration: Develop structured programs for skills, education, spiritual care, and family reintegration.
- Gangsterism & Community Healing: Combat cycles of gangsterism by redirecting energies into vocational, educational, and rehabilitation pathways.

Independence and Collaboration
SAPASOS is apolitical and independent. We favor no single political party or entity, but collaborate with all stakeholders — government, judiciary, attorneys, civil society, and international partners — to bring about systemic change.
